First Annual Tree Photo Contest Sponsored by aFewSteps

When Denise Disney, webmaster of aFewSteps.org, saw photos of tree tunnels from around the world emailed by Swarthmore horticulturalist Charles Cresson, she got an
idea: Why not have a tree photo contest in our own community?

Arbor Day, the last Friday of April, first recognized in 1872, is a fitting occasion to inaugurate “A Photo Lovely as a Tree” Photo Contest. The contest is named after Joyce
Kilmer’s 1913 poem “Trees.”

The rules are broad. Anyone anywhere of any age may enter, but the photos must be taken within the four communities of Nether Providence, Rose Valley, Rutledge, or
Swarthmore. Photographs in either black-and-white or color must include trees, a single tree, or part of a tree, but no people. Entries will be accepted via email between April 26 and June 1 at PhotoContest@aFewSteps.org, where further details can be found.

A professional panel will select five finalists in the youth category and five in the 14-and-over category, and the public will have a week to vote from among the finalists.
Throughout the summer, all ten photos will be framed and displayed at locations throughout the community, recognizing both the beauty of trees in our area as well as the
talent of our residents.
